Features of Mikurajima Island

Mikurajima Island is located in the Pacific Ocean about 200 kilometers (124 miles) south of Takeshiba Pier. It is a small, round island 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) in diameter, with 16 kilometers (9.9 miles) of coastline. From above, the island has the appearance of a green bowl placed upside down. Steep cliffs surround the island. Mountains occupy the central part of Mikurajima, reaching an altitude of 700 to 800 meters (about 2,200 to 2,600 feet). The island used to be volcanic, but no eruption has occurred in historic times, and mature forests now cover the island. Pristine nature remains intact on this secluded island, and the forests are treasure troves of giant trees. Rare flowers also bloom on the island, and a mysterious phenomenon called kisame, literally meaning "tree-rain" in Japanese, provides abundant water to the plants in the forests.
