History of Metropolitan Tama Hills Natural Park

Ruins from the Jomon period (14,000-300 BCE) have been unearthed in the Tama Hills, indicating that humankind has lived in harmony with this land since ancient times. After the Yayoi period (300 BCE-250 CE), people gathered compost from nearby mountain communities and continued cultivating rice and vegetables on farms in an area called Yato, located in the basin of a small river. The lush environment near the water of the Tama River and the broadleaf forests is still preserved today. People in this area live in harmony with nature through activities such as farming for local consumption. Metropolitan Tama Hills Natural Park was designated as a metropolitan natural park in 1950.

The Takahata Fudoson Temple Chrysanthemum Festival is held within the precincts of Takahata Fudoson Temple. Takahata Fudoson Temple is about three minutes on foot from Takahatafudo Station on the Keio Line, or about five minutes on foot from Takahatafudo Station on the Tama Intercity Monorail. During the festival, the temple precincts are filled with about 1,500 chrysanthemums exhibited by chrysanthemum appreciation clubs from 11 cities in the Tama area. You can see large chrysanthemums, cascade chrysanthemums, chrysanthemum bonsai, cut chrysanthemums, and more. The flowers are also judged, and awards such as the Prime Minister’s Award are given to the winners. The festival includes special exhibitions of chrysanthemums, sales of seedlings, and chrysanthemum gardening lessons.
