These awards have been created for the first time this year to highlight world-leading policies by city and regional governments that maximize the opportunity of buildings to mitigate carbon emissions in the environment. Tokyo was praised for the introduction of the first urban Cap-and-Trade Program.
The five other awardees are: San Francisco, Mexico City, Birmingham, Singapore, and New York.
The award ceremony was held in Durban, South Africa on December 5th as part of the United Nation’s Climate Change Conference (COP17). Mr. Wagai, Senior Director of the Urban and Global Environment Division from Tokyo Metropolitan Government, made a speech at the ceremony by saying that we were honored to receive such a wonderful award, and we continue to develop green building measures aimed at creating a low carbon society.
